You've been asking about a pattern for Olive's new quilt, and I am happy to let you know that the wait is over! Here she is! And yes, I quilted every single one of those lines on my Bernina = I am crazy.

When I made Olive's, I was sort of playing around and found that there were a few things I wanted to change for the pattern. So here it is, in perfected form, made of Joel Dewberry's "Aviary 2" fabric. The orange/aqua/browns go really well with my living room, so it just might live here.

It seriously took me a million years to quilt. We're talking 3 whole spools of thread for this quilt. That's 1200 yards of thread if I'm not mistaken. Sheesh.

Luckily, I love how it turned out--so that solid week of quilting was well-spent.

At last!!! I have finally added three more "Swoon" blocks in with the others. What do you think?

It sure is a crazy mix of colors. It's my Circus Swoon! (Or at least that's what I think to myself when I look at it.) My favorite blocks are the orange/blue ones. I think a whole Swoon quilt of those would be really something special.

English Pudding

Most Saturday mornings at my house begin with a hot bowl of English pudding for breakfast. My mom used to make this for me and my brothers and we always loved mixing in our favorite ingredients. My childhood favorite was frozen raspberries; they begin thawing immediately in the hot pudding and leave streaks of color as you stir them. I'm also a big fan of banana slices.

It takes ten to fifteen minutes to make, and you'll feel mighty fancy starting off your day by tempering something. Let's get started!

Ingredients (2 servings)

1 C. milk
1/4 C. granulated sugar
3 T. flour
pinch of salt
1 egg
1 T. butter
1 tsp. vanilla extract
Fresh or frozen fruit

First, put the milk in a microwaveable bowl and heat for about 5 minutes. In the meantime, mix the eggs, flour, sugar, and salt together in a small bowl with a wire wisk.

Now for the tempering! The goal is to combine the egg mixture and hot milk without making scrambled eggs. Begin by pouring a little of the hot milk into the egg mixture while simultaneously stirring. Add a little more milk--I probably end up adding 1/2 cup of hot milk to the egg mixture in total.

Now that the egg mixture has been "warmed up" a little, you can go ahead and incorporate it into the big milk bowl. Just make sure you are stirring the milk as you pour the egg mixture in.

Put the big bowl back in the microwave and cook in 30 second intervals, stirring the pudding in between intervals. Make sure to scrape the sides of the bowl since that is usually where it starts to thicken first.

Once the pudding is thickened, add the butter and vanilla extract and stir well.

Divide among bowls and serve with your toppings! Easy peasy!

A Good Excuse

Recently, I've been wondering aloud when Olive should be transitioning from crib to bed. (She is eighteen months old.) I got a variety of opinions; mainly, to keep her "trapped" in the crib as long as possible.

As I discussed the idea further with one of my best friends, she sold me on the idea that these tasks are best handled sooner than later. (Okay, I also was more than thrilled to have an excuse to use "Ruby" fabric in a large project.)

I love how it all came together! It's a nice sight to see when I come into her room. Oh and did I mention that Olive has been sleeping in it ever since?! I don't blame her, I would sleep in it too. Pattern coming soon!

I've been blogging for a year now. This time last year, I was finally feeling settled in Florida, feeling like I was getting the hang of a new baby, and trying to figure out what how to best channel my creativity (and keep everything else balanced). Lella Boutique was born.

I wasn't really sure what I wanted this blog to be. It started out as a way to document the projects I was working on. I wanted to include detailed tutorials for my friends who had always expressed a desire in sewing. As I started putting more and more time into templates and patterns, I realized that design is where I have really wanted to focus my time and energy.

January has really given me the opportunity to do a lot of thinking about how last year went, things I want to change, my vision for this blog, etc. My most pressing issue is that my family remains my number one priority. I know how lucky I am to be at home to take care of them and want to ensure that they also know they are my priority. (When Olive toddles over and tries to shut my laptop, I know I'm in trouble.)

I have so many ideas and such little time to do them, I'm trying to scale back a little bit. There aren't enough hours in the day and I'm trying to accept this and slow down. I always feel like I'm in such a hurry to get things done.

So here's what to expect for 2012:

I will still try to keep up a new post every week. I'm not cutting out tutorials, but they may be fewer.
More patterns. I've got lots of ideas floating around and can't wait to let them out.
Scrap liquidation. I have a ridiculous amount of fabric, so I've banned myself from buying any more until I can significantly reduce this pile. I've been dying to "Swoon," make my "Farmer's Wife" blocks, sew up a "Katie" quilt, and start my latest favorite, "Hopscotch." Do you remember these cute dresses from my post about quilt market last spring? I think Olive needs this "Daisy" dress by Bananafana to be made in time for Easter.

GOOD SECRETS!!! I have some things I'm working on that can't be shared at this time. So basically, anytime you see a recipe posted, I'm really probably working away on something classified.

What sort of projects have you been putting off? Will you be making time for them?

Simple Line Quilting

Remember my Silly Goose quilt and its simplistic quilting? I had hinted a while back that I would share my quilting method with you...

The method is not difficult as long as you have the right tools at your disposal. The first of these recommended tools is a walking foot attachment for your sewing machine. The other is Therm O Web's PeelNStick Ruler Tape.

Of course, one of the easiest ways to quilt simple lines is to follow the existing lines or seams on the quilt. (See below where I've quilted 1/4" away from the vertical seams.)

But what if I'm working on a non-linear quilt?

That's where my PeelNStick Ruler Tape comes in. With it, you can add lines anywhere you want! In this case, I wanted to insert more lines in between the existing quilted lines I had just added.

First, I cut a piece long enough to run along the whole length of the quilt. Then, I centered the tape between the existing quilted lines.

Next, I sewed about 1/8" away from the edge of the tape on both sides. (You can see where I lined up the walking foot with the edge of the tape.)

I re-used the strip of ruler tape four or five times before tearing a new piece.

And that's pretty much it. Once you finish quilting the desired amount of lines, you're left with a design that is simple and clean--and really showcases the quilt design. Whatever you decide to do, the ruler tape is a fantastic way for you to add lines wherever you want!

My Funky Valentines

I love everything about Valentine's Day.

I don't subscribe to the idea that it's a holiday reserved for couples. No way. It's far more fun to do things for everybody you love. You know how the elementary school kids decorate shoe boxes and make cards for everybody? They've got the right idea.

I've fashioned some sweet little fabric valentines. It's a quick project requiring the most basic of sewing skills. I want to make about a bazillion of these funky valentines.

Even outside of the Valentine's Day theme--how cute would these be in a nursery?! I've hung them across a mirror (below) but am totally picturing them strung across a crib. Minus the buttons, of course (choking hazzard).

I love this fabric. (Ruby by Bonnie & Camille for Moda) It's so bright and happy. Probably why I've been using it for every single project lately. Everybody wants one of these valentines.

Laptop Love

Now that Christmas is over, I can show you the sweet little laptop sleeve I made for my mom. It's the perfect (and most fashionable) way to protect your new electronics from dust and scratches.

To make this one, I used fabrics from Moda's Ruby collection by Bonnie & Camille. It features a simple velcro flap closure and sweet button embellishment.

I was extremely tempted to use soft materials like fleece and flannel but changed my mind when I realized that many of those soft materials conduct static electricity. I guess that would sort of defeat the purpose of a protective sleeve, huh?!

My recommended list of materials:

1/2 yard cotton fabric for the laptop exterior
1/2 yard cotton fabric for the laptop lining
A large scrap of Fairfield's Fusi-Boo Fusible Blended Fiber Batting
3" Velcro (non-sticky) strips

Therm O Web's Super Stik Permanent Glue Stick

Button or other (optional) decorative embellishment

Baby on the Go

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I can't believe it's here already!!! It is really difficult to keep my mouth shut about these things.

Inside this lovely spring issue, you will find my Baby on the Go toddler quilt. Inspiration for my design came about just as Olive was becoming mobile. As I started toddler-proofing the house, I knew I needed to baby-proof some quilt-blocks!

The girl version features prints from Joel Dewberry's Aviary 2 collection. Oh how I love this fabric line! I decided that Olive will need to inherit this on her next birthday...which is why I made sure to use white fleece for the back...

The boy version is made using fun and bold prints from Art Gallery Fabrics. Most of the prints are from the "Revive" collection but I've also used some of their wonderful basics like "Oval Elements" and "Nature Elements." Some baby boy is going to love looking at this terrific color palette.

Peanut Butter Kiss Cookies

It's time to do some more holiday baking. These cookies are one of my favorites of all time. Believe it or not, the recipe is from a grocery store from many years ago when I was a kid. My mom and I were both flabbergasted when we saw how few ingredients were required to make them. See for yourself!

Ingredients:

One 14 oz. can sweetened condensed milk
3/4 C. peanut butter
2 C. Bisquick original baking mix
1 tsp. vanilla extract

sugar

36 Hershey kisses

Heat the oven to 375ºF. Combine the sweetened condensed milk, peanut butter, Bisquick, and vanilla extract. Stir together well with a wooden spoon.

Shape dough into 1 1/4" balls and roll in sugar until coated evenly.

Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake for 8 minutes. They will look more noticeably "crinkled."

Press an unwrapped chocolate kiss into the center of the cookie.

Let them cool for 8 to 10 minutes.

This is my go-to recipe for any occasion requiring mass cookie baking. They always end up looking flawless, and I love how they stay soft for several days. It's quite simple really.

The Perfect {Gingerbread} Man

Goodness gracious. I love everything about gingerbread cookies. They're fun to make and decorate (especially with other people). They fill my house with the best aroma ever. They're soft. They're tasty. Finally, their presence means that Christmas is almost here! Wahoo!

Ingredients:

1/3 C. shortening (I make half of it butter)
1 C. brown sugar (packed)
1 1/2 C. dark molasses
2/3 C. cold water
6 C. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. cinnamon
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl.

Roll out the dough 1/2" thick onto a heavily floured surface. I like to lay down parchment paper for easy clean up. I might have gone a little overboard with the flour.

Use your favorite cookie cutters to cut out cookies. They need not necessarily be associated with Christmas or winter.

Place on parchment paper-lined baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes.

Remove from oven and allow to cool completely. This is what happens when you go overboard with the flour, ha ha!

For the frosting: Combine 2 cups of powdered sugar and 1 cup of softened butter.

Add a couple of tablespoons of orange juice to thin the frosting. Keep adding powdered sugar and orange juice as needed to reach a good consistency to pipe onto the cookies. (Frosting below is still too runny!)

Fill in a frosting bag using a #4 round tip and go crazy!!! Everything looks good in gingerbread form! Let the cookies sit for several hours so the frosting can dry.

I have it on good authority that Santa is a big fan of the cowboy boots!!!

Lovely Layered Hearts {Tree Skirt}

I have a little confession.

Since I got married eight years ago, I have never ever had a Christmas tree-skirt. I'm pretty embarrassed to admit this! It's a travesty! Well I decided to give this wretched "tradition" the boot with a totally easy tree skirt made from felt and scraps.

I started out with 1 yard of white felt.

Then, I made a crude protractor by tying one end of a string to a pencil. I held the other end of the string down in the center of the felt and moved the pencil end around to create a perfect(ish) circle. (Sorry for the lack of pictures involving the protractor...apparently I don't have enough arms.)

Next, I centered a CD and traced around it with a pen. I took a ruler and drew a straight line connecting the outside edge to the center ring.

I cut along the drawn line to the center and removed the center completely. This is the basic tree skirt body. Now onto embellishment!

I decided to make lovely layered hearts using a variety of red, green, and grey materials. Each lovely heart is comprised of three layers: one small heart within a medium heart within a large heart. I rounded up flannel, felt, and fabric scraps and created a heart shape template that includes both fat and skinny layered hearts.

I used that template to trace lots of small, medium, and large hearts onto my materials. After I cut them all out, I started layering! Once I had all of the hearts in their sets, I used Therm O Web's Super Stik Permanent Glue to glue the small heart to the medium heart, and the medium to the large. Oh and I should mention that this glue washes out which makes it the perfect tool for applique since there is no added bulk!

Once all heart layers are glued together, arrange them onto the tree skirt body.

I glued the layered hearts to the tree skirt using more of the glue stick. (You can add a few pins to keep it doubly secure.)

Stitch all layers in place either by machine or hand. (I absolutely adore the look of decorative stitches with embroidery thread, so that's what I did.)

Finally, you will want to "finish" the edges of the tree skirt. You could do something as simple as a blanket stitch! I added large ball fringe right on top and sewed it in place using a zigzag stitch. Giant ric rac could be cute also!

Can I just say how much I love these projects that involve decorative stitching by hand?! I sat back in my comfy couch and watched Olive stomp around to the musical masterpieces of Yo Gabba Gabba.

Oh yeah. I should probably mention something about closures. You probably noticed (and could be annoyed) that I didn't create any to connect the end pieces. Frankly, I felt that the ball fringe trim gave it a nice finished look and didn't need it. You could certainly add covered buttons and loops to connect them if you would like!

No presents are allowed to cover up my tree skirt! Okay, okay, I admit that I had to move them to higher ground because of little Miss Freddy Krueger. I guess it's a win-win situation!

Three Trees

Christmas is coming which means it's time to cuddle up and read one of my favorite Christmas stories, The Tale of Three Trees. It's a wonderful story about three trees who all have giant dreams but discover that God has very different plans for them. (If you're unfamiliar with the story, you can read it here.)

I love the story so much that I wanted to incorporate it into my holiday decorating. Without further ado, a new pattern is born:

Simple Patch Stockings

Several months ago, I designed these stockings for Marcus Fabrics using their Provence Flannel collection by Faye Burgos. Isn't the flannel divine? When I first saw it, I thought of Christmas with the March family from Little Women. That certainly is a nice picture to imagine, don't you think? I love the Provence Flannel. In fact, using it made me realize that flannel is truly the best material to make stockings from. Not only do they feel nice and soft, but the thickness of the flannel really adds a nice bit of sturdiness and structure to the design.

Meet my latest quilt. Yummy fabric, right?!

This sweet fabric collection is called "Ruby" by Bonnie & Camille for Moda. I love how the gray neutral fabric really makes those colors pop. It was a joy to stare at all of these prints for hours and hours while I put the quilt together. It's such a happy palette.

I've decided that this quilt is terrible birth control. As I am sewing it all together, I'm suddenly thinking that I may need another baby daughter to give this quilt to. (I'm also trying to curb the urge to make matching crib bumper pads and wondering if I should be stockpiling fabric.)

Yes, these are the thoughts that are going through my head as I am sewing.

I quilted Silly Goose is with simple lines using my old Bernina and beloved walking foot--a tutorial I plan to add later. Though it's not pictured, I used white minky fabric for the back so that it's up to Miss Olive's "soft blankie" standard.

Fabulous Faux Snowballs

I think I should start off with a disclaimer that these snowballs are not actually for sale. Nope, the cute little sign is part of the charm.

This week, I made snowballs and chuckled as I thought of the original batch of fake snowballs my mom made many years ago. They were to be part of a wonderful winter display at the craft store where she was working. She arranged the snowballs in a cute little basket with a similar homemade sign "advertising" them as five cents each. Big mistake. Within hours, a customer snatched them from the display and bought them. My mom was ready to strangle the cashier.

Later, my mom made extra-large snowballs and turned them into ornaments for the designated "kid" Christmas tree at home. My brothers and I thought they were the coolest ornaments ever! I still love these fabulous faux snowballs and now that I've got my own collection, I can share the "recipe" with you.

Here is a list of basic suppliess:

Styrofoam balls

Snow-Tex by DecoArt (regular or glitter)

Thin wire and wire cutters

A butter knife

Clothesline for drying

I didn't mention specific quantities because it all depends on how many snowballs you want to make, and how big they are. I bought twenty styrofoam balls in small and medium sizes and ended up using six jars of Snow-Tex to cover them. I hope that helps. The Snow-Tex consistency is similar to ricotta cheese while wet so keep that in mind as you are trying to figure out how much to buy. You can always buy more if you need to--which is what I ended up doing. Also, Snow-Tex comes in regular or glitter varieties. Just be consistent in whichever kind you buy.

To prep your styrofoam balls, insert a wire through the styrofoam and out the other side about 1". Twist that end into a hook and push it back into the styrofoam.

On the other side, clip the wire so that it is two or three inches long.

Using your knife, scoop a glob of the Snow-Tex onto the styrofoam ball. Spread it around like you would frost a cupcake. You could certainly try to cover the whole styrofoam ball by holding it by the wire, but I found it easiest to actually hold the styrofoam ball and just cover half of it at a time.

Yes, they're a bit messy, but luckily the mess washes out with soap and water :)

Hang the snowballs to dry onto your clothesline by wrapping the wire around the rope/ribbon/string. (I strung up some old ribbon for a makeshift clothesline.)

Let them dry overnight. Resume applying the Snow-Tex to the other half of the styrofoam and hang to dry overnight again.

Then you are ready to do what you want with them! You could twist the wire into a loop and add a ribbon for ornaments. Or you could tie them into a garland or wreath. I snipped the wire off for my basket of snowballs.

Partridges and Pears

Yeah, I realize it is early November and my tree is already up...

Blame it all on Florida. You've heard me complain about the darn heat all summer, so my goal has been to bring in some of that delicious ice and snow as soon as humanly possibly. Now that Halloween is out of the way, I'm practically skipping Thanksgiving altogether so I can bask in Christmas glory for a while.

I've been scheming about the tree for months now but was never really sure how all the elements would all come together. I wanted my bits of winter, of course, but maybe not exclusively? I thought a lot about other nature-based elements I could incorporate. Birds? Glistening fruit? Cranberries?

I started with a skinny alpine tree and added three packs of lights. (Three packs isn't nearly enough, but it'll suffice.)

Then I added three cranberry garlands...

and some icy (medium-thickness) silver ribbon...(I would have used a thicker ribbon if my tree wasn't so skinny)...

I started out with ten bunches of these frosty berry bouquets and cut each in half (using floral tape to re-bundle each half). I simply nestled them in the tree, aiming to distribute them out as evenly as possible.

When I saw these snowy little birds, I knew they were destined for my tree. Aren't they sweet? (They're from JoAnn's.)

I also really loved the look of these jeweled pears from Home Goods.

Together, they have put "The Twelve Days of Christmas" in my head.

Finally, all that was left to do was add the star on top and plug in the lights!

I must admit that it is a huge relief to have the tree finished already. I imagine it could be nice to actually relax and enjoy the holidays. Meh, who am I kidding? I'm just getting started.

Rustic Holiday Frame

I love this time of year as I am reminded of the countless blessings in my life. To say that "my cup runneth over" is the understatement of the year. At last I have been able to incorporate this sentiment into a cute holiday project. It could be cute perched on a shelf or hung by a wire--I haven't decided where it will live quite yet. (I could also see it packed in an adorable holiday gift basket with lots of goodies,) I was able to make it during Olive's afternoon nap today, so it's a fairly quick project.

Rather than use actual chalk, I've used paint to make the letters stand out.

To make one, you will need:

Kraft wrapping paper or a brown paper bag

Scissors

1 pkg Therm O Web Zots - Clear Adhesive Dots (Jumbo)

One small framed chalkboard

Acrylic paint (I used Americana-brand in "buttermilk")

Skinny paintbrush

Ribbon or other seasonal embellishment

Use a pencil to draw leaves of varying sizes onto the kraft paper. The point is for them not to look perfect! I ended up making about one hundred leaves for the entire project.

After you have drawn enough leaves, cut them out.

Cut the jumbo Zots in half.

Press a half-Zot piece onto the frame.

Slightly fold each paper leaf in half (lengthwise) to give it a bit of dimension. Place it onto the frame where the half-Zot adhesive is placed. Keep adding more leaves and half-Zots until you have worked your way around the frame.

Use a pencil to lightly mark your phrase onto the chalkboard. (If necessary, it can be wiped off with a wet cloth.) Use a skinny paint brush and acrylic paint (or a paint pen, if you prefer) to trace over the penciled words. Let it dry and retrace until the letters are as thick as you desire.

Embellish with small sprigs of cranberries or with a ribbon bow (or anything else you might feel inspired to add).

A Practically Perfect Halloween

Ahem.

I've finally made my first item of clothing.

Yup, that's right. There's nothing like the cheesy polyester costumes to motivate you to get out the sewing machine and make a quality Halloween costume. So what did I make? Lots of stuff! A pleated herringbone skirt, (adding a zipper was another milestone), long sleeves for my white blouse, a red bow tie, a vest (for the chimney sweep), and a fluffy white tail for a kitty cat. I cannot claim credit for the beauty of Olive's kitty hat. (My friend Suzi makes them).

I can't say that I love making clothing because I don't feel the same passion for it as I do quilting. Maybe that will come with more experience? Regardless, I am pleased with the fruit of my labors. Now off to Disneyworld for a great party!

Fall Quilt Market

I might be a little sad about not being able to attend Fall Quilt Market next week. (Okay, or maybe a lot.)

The good news is that I will be represented in spirit by some of my latest projects--most of which can be found in the Marcus Fabrics' booth. I got a glorious box of their new fabric a few weeks ago and have been busy ever since!

Check out the beautiful and bold colors of the"French Dress" collection by Laura Berringer. I made a fun little quilt using some of the crazy blocks from my Halloween Sew-Along. I am going to miss looking at this quilt!

The "French Dress" collection also comes in another beautiful color palette boasting of beautiful black, white, yellow, tan, and gray prints. As you can see, I did some experimentation with pillows--and hope to have a pattern or tutorial for them soon.

I also made a simple pinwheel table runner using this collection. My favorite print has got to be the tan with yellow polka dots!

I also worked with a new collection called "Pine Tree Lodge" by Judie Rothermel. I used some of the sweet prints to make more of my Twinkle Toes stockings and added some extra embellishments like ball fringe and fabric flowers.

I also covered wood letters to spell out noel. I am definitely making more for my house and will have a tutorial coming up soon so you can make some too.

Delicious Holiday Wassail

I love fall weather. I love the crispy leaves, caramel apples, and fall fashion. This morning, I was ecstatic to find the temperature in the 60's as I escorted the Netflix DVD to the mailbox. I decided to celebrate by making some of my favorite homemade wassail.

I admit that I used to hate wassail.

That all changed a few years ago when a bank co-worker brought some for his assigned "treat day" during the holidays. Initially, I poured a cup (just to be polite) but soon found myself pouring another cup, and another, and another. Thankfully, he was willing to share his absolutely delicious recipe and I am going to share it with you. (If you are wondering what wassail is, I think its closest relative is hot cider.)

Ingredients:

1 gallon of water

3 C. granulated sugar

2 cinnamon sticks

10 whole cloves

8 allspice berries

One 12 oz. can frozen lemonade

One 12 oz. can frozen orange juice

64 oz. cran-raspberry juice

In a large soup terrine, combine the water, sugar, and spices. Bring to a boil.
Remove the spices. Add juices to the pot and stir together. Reheat and serve.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to pour myself another cup.

Miss Spunky Rose

Meet my newest little bundle of joy. Miss Spunky Rose is one sassy quilt.

I fell in love with this fabric back in May when I attended Spring Quilt Market in Salt Lake. It is from a lovely collection called "Chelsea" by Whistler Studios for Windham Fabric. The fabric has been sitting in my fabric stash for months and months because I kept changing my mind on how I would use it. Can I please have some more?

I used soft, white fleece for the back. There is just something special about fleece, don't you think? All I know for sure is that babies totally dig it. (I can't get Olive to stop eating her fleece blankie...the mere sight of this quilt makes her drool.)

You can easily make one like Miss Spunky Rose using my Basic Block Quilt tutorial. (I've added 41 extra squares to make it bigger. Finished quilt size is 56 x 56", which makes it a generously-sized baby or toddler quilt.)

Christmas {in October}

Yes, Christmas decorating is still months away, but you will want to pick up the pattern while it is available. Here is the mommy and daddy pair, in all of their elf-toed glory:

Autumn Table Runner

My dinner table received some autumn love today. I took one of my favorite prints from Joel Dewberry's Aviary 2 collection (saffron damask) and transformed it into a simple table runner.

Materials:

3/4 yard of cotton fabric

One large scrap of batting (at least 12 x 36")

Therm O Web's PeelnStick Ruler Tape

To get started, cut two 12 x 36" rectangles from the 3/4 yard of fabric for the front and back pieces of the table runner.

Turn over one fabric rectangle and line it up within grid lines on your cutting mat. Count six inches away from each corner (in both directions) and lay the ruler down to connect those points. Draw a line along the ruler's edge. Repeat at all corners on both fabric rectangles.

Walk the {Quilted} Line

Dear walking foot:

Where have you been all my life? And why am I just now learning to use one? Crazy.

Do you know the difference between a regular presser foot and a walking foot? All I knew for the longest time was that if you wanted to quilt straight lines (and have them look good), you would need the latter.

So what makes a walking foot so special? Feed dogs.

Because of a quilt's added thickness, one set of feed dogs is not enough. A walking foot adds an extra set to sit on top of the quilt, ensuring that all the quilt's layers are fed through the machine evenly. Otherwise, you get bunching.

I'm going to use my walking foot to quilt an autumn table runner. There are a billion ways I could quilt it, but I am going to use one of my favorite new tools: Therm O Web's PeelnStick Ruler Tape.

The ruler tape is about 1/2" wide so the quilted lines will be skinny and cute. I am going to lay it down wherever I want and trace along it on both sides. The whole point of marking these lines is to show me where to guide the needle.

I started out by centering the table runner within grid lines on my cutting mat. Then, I laid the ruler tape down to split the center.

Using Crayola washable markers (a wonderful tip I learned from Lulu), I drew along the ruler on both sides.

Then I added another set of lines a few inches away on both sides...

I still wanted more lines, so I rotated the table runner so that its bottom side lined up along a diagonal line on the cutting mat. I added more lines about 3 1/2" apart all across the table runner. There is no rule about where you should lay the ruler tape! Just wherever you want!

Once I was satisfied with the amount of lines, I started sewing. I used both hands to help guide the fabric and stay on the lines.

Next, I washed the table runner to remove all traces of the washable marker. After it dried, I ironed it with starch. Ta da!

Dinner in a Pumpkin

Oh my heck. There is nothing cooler than eating dinner out of a pumpkin. I started doing this last year and have been excited about it ever since. Yes, I have been haunting the grocery stores just about every day in hopes that my precious pumpkins would arrive soon. At long last! I am declaring it my family's tradition forevermore. (Thanks for the recipe, Mom!)

To make it, you will need:

1 medium pumpkin

1 box Zatarain's jambalaya rice mix (mild)

2 1/2 C. water

2 T. vegetable oil

1 kielbasa or other comparable sausage, cut into bite-sized pieces

1 lb. shrimp, peeled and deveined

1 1b. boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite-sized pieces

½ C. celery, diced

1 medium onion, diced

1 green bell pepper, diced

First, set the oven to 350°F. Clean out the pumpkin and place it in the heating oven.

*Note: When cutting a lid for the pumpkin, make sure you carve a big enough hole that you will be able to scoop dinner out!

My Favorite {Perfect} Skinny Binding Method

This skinny binding method is simply the best! It is great for quilts, table runners, place mats, and so on. To make it "skinny," we'll cut 2 1/2" strips across the width of the fabric (WOF). How many strips? That depends entirely on the perimeter of your project.

Remember learning how to calculate the perimeter in elementary school? We'll need to calculate this to know just how many strips of fabric we'll need for the binding. In this example, a table runner's sides measure 20 x 30". The perimeter (20 + 30 + 20 + 30) is 100". So we will need at least 100" for this project's binding .

The standard WOF is 45". Two strips (45" + 45" = 90") is not long enough, which means that I will need three (45" + 45" + 45" = 135"). I know some people totally tune out when they see math being used, but it's not too bad! Once you know how many strips, go ahead and cut them on your cutting mat.

Now the strips need to be sewn end-to-end to make one giant strip. To minimize the bulk of the binding later, I connect the strips at a bias. (This means "at a diagonal.") I do this by laying two ends together at a ninety-degree angle, right sides together. Next, I draw a diagonal line and pin in place, as demonstrated below.

Old New Table

Surprise, surprise. I have distressed another piece of furniture in my house.

A couple of weekends ago, I got reeeeeally sick of looking at my dining room table. My husband bought it last year when we first moved to Florida. I was busy with a [six-week old] Olive and thereby entrusted him with the task of getting us some cheap furniture a la Craigslist. Let's just say this table was a practical choice, fit in the budget, and had a sweet spirit. You may remember it?

Tile on a table. So precious. No, the legs weren't blue before. I just forgot to take the picture until after they were already painted. (I get too excited about these projects and just dive in without thinking about these things.)

RIP, old table. You had a good life. You served well as the background for many of my sewing tutorials. Ta ta.

If you are interested in what I did to it, pull up a chair.

I painted over the whole table with [white] bonding primer.
I added two coats of dark brown latex paint. I let it dry, and then globbed bits of petroleum jelly here and there (mostly in cracks, crevices, and on edges).
I painted on two coats of the bluish-gray (also latex) paint. Oh and I used a hand brush, not a roller. As I added the bluish-gray, I just kept painting without re-dipping the brush too often to give it a dry-brushed look in certain areas. Once the final blue layer dried (overnight), I wiped over the whole table with paper towels and the still-wet petroleum jelly came off to reveal more brown.
I thought I was done but then decided to add another layer of "dirt" with a black-tinted glaze.
The paint was a little "sticky" days afterwards so I added a thin coat of polyurethane wax (furniture paste wax) and it solved that problem.

Now I just need to figure out what to do to those chairs? Reupholster the existing? Find replacements?

I've had enough of this Florida humidity. Blek!

I made a bouquet for you. It was pretty dang easy and it looks great in my kitchen entryway. I started out with a simple bouquet of twigs like this:

I added some dainty berry twigs in orange...

...and some in white!

Then, I threw everything into a [painted] spaghetti jar and got this wild looking arrangement.

So simple but very stimulating to look at. I love seeing the bright bits of orange every time I walk by.

Don't keep me waiting, October!

Trick or Treat {In Style}

This week, I have been slaving over some pretty cool trick-or-treat bags. I started out decorating one just for Olive but somehow ended up decorating six more for all of my nieces and nephews. I may have gone a little overboard!

They were a fun and quick project with minimal sewing. Seriously. I bought some plain canvas bags from the craft store and fused on all the different shapes. More about that in a minute. Let's do a little show and tell.

Distressed Chalkboard Menu

I am totally diggin' my new little chalkboard menu. It all started with a trip to Ikea, where I discovered the Ung Drill Mirror:

At the time, I had been dying to try a method I had seen at Honey Bear Lane where Heidi uses petroleum jelly to distress cull wood:

With such ornate details and crevices, I knew the Ikea frame had the potential to look really great. I didn't want any of the frame's black plastic showing through, so I began by priming it with Krylon-brand primer (white). After that dried, I painted it with a couple coats of dark brown spray paint. Then, using Heidi's method [after the brown paint dried], I applied petroleum jelly in the frame's cracks and crevices. Then, I spray-painted the whole frame white. It took a couple layers (sprayed 15 minutes apart) until it was as solid white as I wanted. I let the white paint dry overnight. The next morning, the white paint was dry, but the petroleum jelly [underneath] was not. I took a paper towel and rubbed it all over the frame and white paint came off everywhere I had put petroleum jelly. Totally awesome.

I still had no idea what to fill the frame with. I wasn't even sure what room to put it in. Then one day, saw this little chalkboard menu on Camille Roskelley's blog. It was just chalkboard contact paper. And it suddenly clicked!

I bought some chalkboard contact paper immediately and covered the frame's glass with it. Now, I have this totally cool menu board! (It sure beats the little index card I had on the fridge.) And in case you are wondering, the bacon and leek risotto is amazing. Here's the recipe.

{The Best} Chicken Salad Sandwiches

My husband and I have a serious addiction to chicken salad sandwiches. We can't get enough of the dang things! When we got married eight years ago, it was close to Thanksgiving. For the reception, we served things like pumpkin cheesecake and hot cider to fit the season. My husband's one request was to serve chicken salad sandwiches--and I am so glad that we did! Some couples have a song; we have chicken salad sandwiches.

A good chicken salad recipe can come in handy for a variety of occasions like baby showers, bridal showers, picnics, etc. Or, if you are like us, we make it for no reason at all. Here is our lovely recipe:

2 C. cooked chicken, shredded
1/2 C. celery, diced
2 1/2 T. yellow onion, finely minced
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 C. real mayonnaise
Pepper, to taste
1/2 C. grapes or craisins
Walnuts (optional)

Just throw all the ingredients into a big bowl and mix everything together with a big wooden spoon. The chicken salad filling can be made ahead of time and refrigerated until it's ready to serve. You can use a variety of breads, though I always prefer fresh croissants from the local bakery.

Crib Bumpers with Piping

It should come as no surprise that a nursery is my favorite room to decorate. When I first started designing Olive's nursery, one of the first things I made was her crib bumpers. At the time, I was working full-time and settled on making them simply. I would have liked to add piping but didn't really know how and didn't have time to figure it out. Since then, I have gone back and created a crib bumper tutorial that includes decorative piping. And I just about died over how they turned out!

I used Art Gallery Fabrics' "Bazaar Style" collection by Pat Bravo for the gorgeous girl set. Can't you just imagine an "Arabian Nights" nursery theme? You know that a baby is absolutely going to love looking at those prints! And I love the full piping!

This darling boy set was made from Michael Miller Fabrics' "Secret Garden" collection by Sandi Henderson. I am tempted to buy and hoard some of this fabric just in case I have a baby boy some day.

The tutorial for my bumper pads with piping was created exclusively for Fairfield using their Poly-Fil NU-Foam Baby Bumper Pads. Ole, Olive, Ole!

I have been planning Olive's first birthday party in my head since she was about six months old. I don't think I have ever been so excited for anyone's birthday before. Planning kid parties is just fun. I decided a fiesta theme would be really fun to work with.

I am a little bit obsessed about Olive's margarita cupcakes. I used a chocolate batter and squished mini milky way candy bars into the center prior to baking. After cooling the cupcakes, I dipped them (twice) in [heated] cream cheese frosting. After letting them dry for about five minutes, I rolled their edges in sprinkles. I popped them into a cute paper liner, and added a lime wedge and drink umbrella right before serving. They were reeeeeeeally tasty.

Kevin made sopapillas. Guests stuffed them with homemade beans, guacamole and salsa--all made by Kevin!! Yay for homemade guacamole.

And as usual, I made sugar cookies. I tinted whipped cream to look like guacamole and made a fresh fruit salsa from kiwis and strawberries to look like little faux chips and salsa hors d'oeuvres. I made some slight changes from this awesome idea by Sugarbelle!

Olive loves horchata so we obviously had to make some. It turned out pretty yummy and it was easy and cheap to make!

We decorated with some little cacti and let the guests take them home as favors.

Olive got to destroy a mini "chocolate decadence" cake from our favorite Italian market Mazzaro's. It's a flourless cake that kind of looks like a slab of fudge.

I would have loved to take more pictures but things were a little crazy! Even before the party, I was running behind. Hope you enjoyed these pictures!

Quilting 101

Many of my friends tell me that they want to quilt but just don't know where to start. I've put together a compilation of tutorials and used lots of photographs and detailed instructions in the hopes that it will be helpful. (I love sharing my quilting addiction.)

I love the simplicity of a basic block quilt and thought it would be the best way to get started. Basically, you just need to know how to sew a straight line with your sewing machine.

There are various ways to arrange the blocks to form patterns. Sometimes, I enjoy mine placed in random order. (There is just something about the organized chaos that my eye finds extremely appealing.)

Other times, the fabric seems to have a mind of its own and I find that the design I had envisioned is not the one I actually go with.

The important thing is to have fun and take your time! I've broken this basic block quilt into four lessons to really make it comprehensive.

Funky Cabinet Makeover

I am totally digging my turquoise cabinet. I think Anthropologie would be proud.

Check out the old beast before. It sat atop an ugly set of black metal legs. (I forgot to take the picture when they were still on, but trust me when I say it was no bueno.)

Basically, I just followed my distressed picture frame tutorial (using both tinted-glaze and sandpaper methods) at a much larger scale.

For such a large furniture piece, I opted to buy the primer and paint in bucket-form rather than spray-can. After removing the cabinets and hardware, I primed (1 coat), I painted (2 coats), I glazed, and then my husband sanded the hell out of it just using some sandpaper. I think he did an awesome job. I love how cruddy it is.

Oh and the legs? You can just pick those up at Home Depot, ready to be painted. Neither my husband nor I were sure how to install them at first glance, but we quickly learned that you just need the matching metal piece of hardware. It was a piece of cake and sooooooo much better than the cheesy metal legs! We started and finished this project over the weekend.

And because I'm going for a [contemporary] French farmhouse look, I added an antiqued mirror (tutorial from HGTV here) and a couple jars of flowers/weeds to go with it. I want to add a few more things, but I haven't completely decided what yet.

The Quilt of a Thousand Swear Words

Have you ever wanted to cuss up a storm over a sewing mistake? I certainly have.

My most recent "moment" was about a month ago when I discovered the mangled back-side of a quilting job in progress. I had been using some lovely, cuddly fleece for the back of a baby quilt. Despite my careful basting (sticky basting spray and all), the fleece had stretched while I was moving it around in a free-motion swirl design. In a way, I wasn't totally surprised because the fleece had made the quilt thicker and heavier, thus more difficult to move around. The back was bunched up in several places and just looked ghastly to me. After little Olive washed my mouth out with soap, I picked up my seam ripper and went to town picking out stitches for the rest of the day. So frustrating! (I was finally able to quilt it properly, but I kept thinking that there must be an easier way to quilt the soft backings.)

This situation was on my mind as I attended Quilt Market a few weeks ago. When I came across the Robert Kaufman Cuddle booth, I got the opportunity to talk with one of the designers and ask her about any quilting tricks or tips when dealing with these "soft" materials. She had several brilliant suggestions, and the overall idea was to ditch the detailed quilting when using soft materials. Instead, I will show you how to do what I call invisible quilting.

Lacy Roses

I made a few lacy rose tags to adorn a tree for the Marcus Fabrics booth at Quilt Market. They are soooooooo easy to make and require minimal sewing. Seriously. If you want a good beginner sewing project, this one is awesome, not to mention just cute.

I got my inspiration for the lacy rose tags from a favorite necklace that Olive is modeling for you. (And doesn't she look thrilled?!) The necklace actually utilizes tulle, but I decided to use lace instead.

Carrot Cookies

I am quite sure that this is the Easter Bunny's favorite treat. It's sweet, buttery, and yes, it contains carrots. It's covered with a delicious orange glaze--and is most comparable to an orange roll than anything else I can think of. These cookies are simple to make and produce a small batch (one to two dozen) of cookies--so you won't feel too guilty when you devour them all.

Spring Brunch

I've got spring fever, and it has started to spread to the dining room. For the dining area, I wanted a color palette that was fresh, clean, and bright. As I began looking through my fabric scraps for inspiration, I came across these absolutely adorable prints from Marcus Fabrics. I began imagining brunch at Sundance, or a morning hike in Park City.

This quick Spring Dot Table Runner would be cute in so many different colors to fit whatever theme you are going for. If you're going for a St. Patrick's Day theme, choose lots of green dots. If you want more of an Easter-egg type of look, go with a variety of pastels.

Materials:

2/3 yard of fabric
1/2 yard Heat N' Bond iron adhesive
Fabric scraps for the dots
1/2 yard of cotton fabric for a binding
batting
cotton fabric for the back

From the 2/3 yard of fabric, cut thirty 5" squares.

On your 1/2 yard of iron adhesive, trace thirty circles on the paper side. As you can see, I used the base of a plastic cup to get my circle shape. You can use whatever is available.

The next step is to iron this paper to your scraps of fabric. Because I am using several different scraps, I first cut the iron adhesive into sections so I am only ironing 5 or 6 circles onto each scrap. Begin by placing your first scrap ("wrong" side facing up) onto your ironing board. Place the iron adhesive section over it, paper-side is facing up. Press the two layers together with your iron. (Refer to package instructions for heat setting.)

Cut out all the circles.

Remove the paper-backing from your fabric circles.

Place the fabric circle on one of the 5" squares so it is centered. I just eyeballed it.

Iron in place. The iron's heat will cause the fabric circle to fuse to the square.

Then, I like to stitch the circles in place.

Arrange the squares in the formation you desire. I wanted a long table runner, so I arranged them in ten rows--three blocks to a row. You don't even have to use all the squares--customize it to your table (like I did for my kitchen entry).

We will first stitch the blocks into their rows. Start with the top row.

Fold the first block onto its neighbor and pin them together on the side where you will sew them.

Stitch the blocks together using 1/4" seam allowance.

Lay it back down and get ready to add the next square in line.

Iron the seams open so they are nice and flat.

Repeat until all the blocks are sewn into rows. The next step is to sew all the rows together. Start with the first two.

Lay the first row down onto the second one and pin them together on the side that will be sewn.

Stitch down the rows using the same 1/4" seam allowance.

Iron the seams open. Repeat until all rows are sewn together and you have a completed table runner-top.

Iron the table runner-top with a starch spray. Lay it on top of the scrap of batting.

Fold the table runner-top in half (on itself) so the back of it is exposed. Lightly spray basting spray onto the exposed back-half.

Pick up the corners and gently lay it back down onto the batting, smoothing away any wrinkles. Repeat with the other half of the table runner-top.

Flip the whole thing over so that the batting is on top. Lay down the back fabric to cover the batting and repeat the same steps to baste the back fabric to the batting. (Note: I happened to use a giant scrap of cream fleece for the back of mine which I would not normally recommend for a table runner. Not only is it thick and thus more difficult to quilt, but it's just totally unnecessary. You aren't going to swaddle a baby in the table runner...but it was a scrap that matched, which was the reason I used it...)

Once again, smooth away any wrinkles. Turn the table runner back onto its top and use safety pins as a reinforcement to keep all the layers together.

If you know me at all, my next step is to machine quilt this using my fabulous freehand machine quilting tutorial. After I have finished quilting my table runner, I trim away the excess batting and back fabric.

It looks so good! I love the swirls!

Next, follow my basic binding tutorial to complete the table runner. (And FYI: from my 1/2 yard of fabric for the binding, I only needed three of the 4" strips cut across the width.)

Birds of a Feather Pillow Pattern

Guess what? I recently learned how to make pillow covers and I'm officially addicted! I've created a pattern (which also utilizes appliqué--my other obsession) and have it for sale for $3.50 on my Etsy shop. It is designed to cover a 12 x 16" pillow and has an envelope-opening in the back. You can arrange the birds, branches, and leaves, however you want and in whatever color scheme you like.

Last Christmas, my family went home to Utah for a visit. One of my favorite stops is at Robert's Craft--where my mom is a designer. I always love looking at what she is working on. I almost died when I saw her icy inter tree. I knew immediately that I wanted one for next Christmas.

Fast forward a few months later, and it is raining branches in my yard. I used one for Olive's baby bird mobile, and found another...perfect for the Spring Tree!

Olive's Baby Bird Mobile

When I was pregnant with Olive, baby magazines began to appear in my mailbox. One of them featured a beautiful nature-inspired nursery designed by Zeal Interiors that I immediately fell in love with. My favorite part? A simple white branch mobile with white swallows suspended from it. It was so charming, and looked simple enough to duplicate.

I put off making it for a while because of the craziness of a cross-country move, new baby, husband in law school, etc. I had almost forgotten about it until I stumbled upon the most beautiful branch in my yard. It was just too perfect to be ignored. I plucked it from the ground and got to work on my own colorful rendition.

Perfect Pinwheels & Zigzag Frenzy Pattern

February 2010 my husband and I sat in a doctor's office, eagerly awaiting the ultrasound of our baby. I was pretty sure we were having a boy--I have all brothers and just figured the odds were in favor of a "he." Well, baby Olive wasted no time in proving just how unladylike she was with a full spread-eagle pose. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. I had totally dismissed the possibility of a girl. A close-up of her hand also revealed some serious attitude--let's just call it a display of crude sign language.

I celebrated by rushing over to the quilt shop. I had been aching to make something for the baby but had held off (pending the result of the ultrasound). At that time, I was incredibly fortunate to live next door to a fabulous quilt shop. I told myself I was just going to browse, just get some ideas. (HA HA HA, we all know how likely that is for a fabric addict.) Twenty minutes later, I was on my way home with a bundle of fabric and big plans for my afternoon off of work. I knew I wanted an old-fashioned design with contemporary colors to match the already-vibrant personality of Miss Olive. I finally sketched out a simple pinwheel design to showcase the ice cream flavors of fabric I had selected. And like most of my projects, once I started, I didn't want to stop until it was finished. It was completed two days later.

Halloween Sew-Along: Block #1

To make block #1, you will need three contrasting fabric scraps cut in the following dimensions:

Two 5" blocks from color A

(I used "Black Running Stitch" by Kathy Schmitz for Moda)

Two 5" blocks from color B

(I used "Black Houndstooth" by Michael Miller Fabrics)

Four 2" blocks from color C

(I used "Little Lady Pink Kumquat Antique Dots" by Alexander Henry)

When we break square #1 down, you can see that it is made up of four pieces.

To make each one of these four squares, first take each 2" block, turn it over, and draw a diagonal line from one corner to another. Pair each 2" block with one 5" block, lining them up at a corner, right sides of the fabric together. Pin in place.

Sew along each drawn diagonal line.

Clip 1/4" away from the seam.

Iron open the seam so it is flat.

Arrange all four blocks in a checkerboard pattern, orienting each square to create a diamond pattern in the center.

Sew the blocks into rows using 1/4" seam allowance, ironing open the seams.

Sew the rows together (making sure the seams line up) and press open the seams. Congratulations! You have completed your first square! Easy, right?! Only five more to go!

Halloween Sew-Along: Block #2

For Block #2, you will need four contrasting fabric scraps cut into the following dimensions:

One 3 1/2" block from fabric A

(I used "Little Lady Pink Kumquat Antique Dots" by Alexander Henry)

Four 3 1/2" blocks from fabric B

(I used "Dalmatian Ta Dot" by Michael Miller Fabrics)

Two 2 x 3 1/2" strips from fabric C and

Two 2 x 6 1/2" strips from fabric C

(I used "Black Houndstooth" by Michael Miller Fabrics)

Two 2 x 6 1/2" strips from fabric D and

Two 2 x 9 1/2" strips from fabric D

(I used "Black Running Stitch" by Kathy Schmitz for Moda)

The first step is to add a border using the strips from fabric C. Take the shorter strips and sew them to the sides of the square using 1/4" seam allowance. (Assume the 1/4" seam allowance for everything unless I say otherwise.)

Next, add the longer strips to the top and bottom to complete the border. Iron open the seam allowances.

Add another border using fabric D: first, the shorter strips to the sides; then the longer strips to the top and bottom.

But we're not finished yet! Do you remember how we added new corners to Block #1? We are going to do something similar.

Take each block of fabric B and line them up with the corners. Draw a diagonal line and pin in place.

Sew on the drawn diagonal lines and clip 1/4" away from the seams.

Iron open the seams, and voila!

Halloween Sew-Along: Block #3

I love my funky little block #3! It looks a little complicated at first glance but is quite easy once you take a closer look. Here it is, broken down into nine smaller blocks:

As you see, there are two different types of blocks--little checkerboard squares and triangle-blocks. Here is what you will need to make them:

Two 4" squares of fabric A and

Six 2" squares of fabric A

(I used "Dalmatian Ta Dot" by Michael Miller Fabrics)

Two 4" squares of fabric B and

Four 2" squares of fabric B

(I used "Ebony Ta Dot" by Michael Miller Fabrics)

Ten 2" squares of fabric C

(I used "Little Lady Pink Kumquat Antique Dots" by Alexander Henry)

First, let's create our little checkerboard squares. Pair each orange 2" square with a 2" white or gray square.

Stitch each pair together using 1/4"seam allowance and iron open the seams. (Assume 1/4" seam allowance unless I state otherwise.) Then, take two matching pairs and arrange them in a checkerboard pattern (as demonstrated below). Sew them together, making sure the center seams line up.

There should be enough to create three orange/white combos and two orange/gray checkerboards. Next, we'll make our triangle-blocks. Take one 4" square from each color and place them right sides together. Using a pencil and ruler, draw a diagonal line from one corner to another.

Line up the presser foot against the line and sew down. Repeat on the other side of the line.

Cut along the drawn diagonal line to separate them into blocks. Iron open the seam.

You should have four completed triangle-blocks like the one below.

Now, arrange all of your blocks like this:

Sew the blocks into rows.

Sew the rows together, making sure the seams line up.

Halloween Sew-Along: Block #4

I really really really like block #4. It's my favorite. There are a number of ways you could arrange the four "arrow" blocks as I call them (I think the technical name for this block is ozark maple leaf). I happened to like them facing one direction--it makes me think of the never-ending Utah road construction for some reason. (I totally don't miss that part of Utah.) You could face the arrows into the center, face them outward, etc.

Whatever you decide, here is what you will need to make them:

One 3 1/2" square from fabrics A, B, C, and D

(I used "Black Mints," "Black DeLovely Damask," "Ebony Ta Dot," and "Black Houndstooth" by Michael Miller Fabrics)

One 2 x 3 1/2" strip from fabrics A, B, C, and D

One 2 x 5" strip from fabrics A, B, C, and D

Eight 2" squares from fabric E

(I used Little Lady Pink Kumquat Antique Dots" by Alexander Henry)

On each 3 1/2" block, lay down two 2" orange blocks (right sides together) and line them up at opposite corners. Using a pencil and ruler, draw diagonal lines as demonstrated and pin in place.

Sew along the diagonal line(s) and clip 1/4" away from the seams.

Iron open the seams so the block will lie flat. Here is the resulting block:

Arrange the block with its corresponding strips as shown. Sew on the shorter strip to the side first, using 1/4" seam allowance. (Assume this seam allowance unless I state otherwise.) Iron the seam open.

Next, add the longer strip..

Repeat the above steps to create four arrow blocks (or leaves, whatever you prefer to call them). Arrange them as you like.

Sew the blocks into rows.

And sew the rows together, lining up the seams.

Only two more blocks to go!

Halloween Sew-Along: Block #5

Block #5 is the skull-and-crossbones block. At least that what it reminds me of. Like block #3, it can look a little scary until you break it into smaller pieces.

No as scary, right? To make block #5, here is what you will need:

One 3 1/2" square from fabric A

(I used "Black Houndstooth" by Michael Miller Fabrics)

Four 3 1/2" squares from fabric B

(I used "Black Running Stitch" by Kathy Schmitz for Moda)

Four 2 x 3 1/2" strips from fabric C and

Eight 2" squares from fabric C

(I used "Little Lady Pink Kumquat Antique Dots" by Alexander Henry)

Four 2 x 3 1/2" strips from fabric D

(I used "Ebony Ta Dot" by Michael Miller Fabrics)

First, take one 2 x 3 1/2" strip of each color and sew them together using 1/4" seam allowance. (Keep assuming the 1/4" seam allowance...)

Take the four 3 1/2" blocks of fabric B and lay two 2" blocks on opposite corners, right sides of the fabric together. Using a pencil and ruler, draw diagonal lines on the [back of the] 2" blocks, as demonstrated. Pin in place.

Sew along the diagonal line(s) and clip 1/4" away from the seam.

Iron open seams.

Now arrange the blocks together like this:

Sew the blocks into rows.

Sew the rows together.

Wahoo! Only one more block to go. And you'll probably be happy that I have saved the easiest for last!

Halloween Sew-Along: Block #6

I saved the easiest block for last! Here's what you will need:

Six 2 x 9 1/2" strips in fabrics A, B, C, D, E, and F

(I used "Black DeLovely Damask," by Michael Miller Fabrics; "Little Lady Pink Kumquat Antique Dots" by Alexander Henry; "Dalmatian Ta Dot," "Black Mints," "Ebony Ta Dot," and "Black Houndstooth" by Michael Miller Fabrics)

First, arrange the strips in a line in the order you desire. Sew the first two strips together using 1/4" seam allowance.

Add the next one...and the next one...and the next one...

Iron open all seams.

And that is all.

You should now have a total of six funky blocks, ready to be made into a table runner! Now I don't know about you, but my blocks are far from being perfectly square. (They should roughly measure 9 1/2".)

Trim them down to 9" squares. This will make them look nice and clean and also ensure that they are completely uniform in size.

To do this, I took one of the blocks and centered it on my grid cutting mat so that it slightly (and equally) overlaps a 9" square's grid measurements. This isn't going to be major cutting. Just a little trim. The main point is to cut the same amount off of each side.

Once all the blocks are trimmed to 9", it's time to sew them together into the table runner! Stay tuned for next week's tutorial on adding the finishing touches!

Halloween Sew-Along: The Finishing Touches

Now that you have completed all six blocks, it's time to put them all together! The first thing to do is figure out how you want your blocks arranged. Here's how I arranged mine:

You could sew them all together just like that, or you could add sashing. What is sashing? Quite simply, it is the addition of strips of fabric between all of the blocks. If you want to add sashing, here is what you will need:

Eight 1 1/2 x 9" strips

Three 1 1/2 x 32" strips

(I used "Little Lady Pink Kumquat Antique Dots" by ALexander Henry)

Whether you use sashing or not, the first step is to sew the blocks into rows. If using sashing, just add a 1 1/2 x 9" strip between all the blocks in a row, and on the outside. Use 1/4" seam allowance and press open all seams.

Next, sew the rows together, making sure the block seams line up. If using sashing, sew the 32"-length strips between the rows and outside as well. Trim off any excess sashing and iron open all seams.

Now it's time to add batting and fabric for the back. I've used Fairfield's Fusi-Boo batting. It's really great for a project like this because all that is needed is an iron--no sticky basting spray required! Whatever kind of batting you decide to use, you will need a rectangle of it that slightly bigger than the table runner top. For the back, you will need 3/4 yard of fabric.

(The following instructions are for the fusible batting) Lay the back fabric on the ground (or other flat surface) facing down. Lay the batting rectangle on top of it and smooth away wrinkles. Add the table runner top facing up, smoothing away more wrinkles. The most important thing is to make sure that the table runner top is centered over batting and back fabric.

Following Fusi-Boo package instructions, I've set my iron to a "wool" setting with steam. Starting in the middle of the table runner, I iron, heating each area for 3-4 seconds. I continue to iron outward, smoothing the layers as I go.

I didn't feel like the heat from the iron fused the back fabric to the batting very well, so I turned the whole thing over and iron the back similarly.

The next step is to quilt it. You could do this in a variety of ways. I merely installed my darning foot, lowered the feed dogs, and did a simple squiggly-sort of line over the sashing. (See my Freehand Machine Quilting tutorial here for more details.)

Here is what it looks like on the back:

And a view of the intersecting squiggly lines on the front. It really didn't feel the need to quilt it too much since it is already a pretty busy table runner.

Trim the batting and back fabric to line up with the table runner top.

The final step is to add a binding. I have a couple of binding tutorials, but I would recommend my newest one: My Favorite {Perfect} Skinny Binding. For this, you will need 1/4 yard of fabric. From that fabric, cut three strips 2 1/2" x WOF (assuming the standard 45" width of fabric).

After the binding is finished, you get to stand back and bask in the glory of your labors. And figure out which table will get it.

Week 1: Fabric Selection & Pre-Washing

The first step in making a basic block quilt is gathering materials. The materials listed below will make a 36 1/2 x 45 1/2" baby quilt.

Materials:

Seven or eight fat quarters of coordinating cotton fabric

1/2 yd of cotton fabric for the binding

1 1/2 yds of cotton fabric for the back

40 x 50" piece of cotton batting

Fabric selection is by far my favorite part of the quilt-making process. With so many delicious collections of fabric on the market, it is easy to feel a little overwhelmed with indecision. But where to start?

Explore the quilt shops in your area. If you are lucky, you might have several to visit. Quilt shops are the absolute best place to find beautiful fabric, not to mention inspiration! It is at a quilt shop that you will find Moda, Michael Miller, Marcus, Art Gallery, and Windham, just to name a few of my favorites. You will not find the same lovely stuff at the chains like Wal-mart. The quality of the fabric at quilt shops is also superior in terms of thread count...let's just say that you get what you pay for. I have been totally dying because there are no quilt shops in my area..what's a girl to do?
Buy fabric online. There are many online shops that sell fabric. I happen to really like browsing the Etsy fabric shops because the selection is fantastic. It is always a delight to browse through by bundles of fabric, especially when the shop owner has a really good eye. A lot of these Etsy shops also have facebook pages. By "liking" them, you see announcements about new fabric coming in, sales, etc. It helps me feel in the loop. Besides Etsy, Fat Quarter Shop is another place I like to do online fabric shopping. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of shops to choose from on the internet, and those are just a couple that I really like.

Once you've found a good shop, your challenge is to choose from all the eye candy before you. I always go for the fat quarters. (There is just something about that neatly folded bundle that makes my heart happy.) Instead of having to rip a whole bolt of fabric out of the wall, I can easily grab the fat quarters and begin matching. I can lay several next to each other and begin to imagine what my quilt could look like.

It is always good to choose a variety in terms of color and scale. Notice that some of the patterns are busy while others are simple. Some are colorful, others are more monochromatic. This combination is pretty spunky! I have a variety of designers' fabrics in here like Tula Pink, Aneela Hoey, and Amy Butler.

Now that I have all my fabric selected, I am really excited to get started! But what about pre-washing? I have to admit that for the longest time I totally skipped this step. I blame it on all the excitement to get started. If you talk to different quilters, you will get a variety of answers on the subject. Here are some of the reasons I am all about pre-washing:

To pre-shrink the fabric. This doesn't require much explanation, but if you plan to ever wash the finished product, it will shrink. Pre-washing the fabric beforehand ensures minimal shrinkage later.
To avoid color bleeding. Some fabrics (especially reds and blues) have dyes that can bleed when washed. If you pre-wash the fabrics, you will prevent the dark colors bleeding onto the light colors. Run a colorfast test on any fabrics you think could bleed.
To remove chemicals. Manufacturers treat fabric with various chemicals like formaldehyde and "sizing." Formaldehyde is a pesticide used to keep the bugs away. "Sizing" is starch and makes the fabric feel crisp and stiff. It makes the fabric easier to cut, so I after pre-washing, I just iron my fabric with a heavy starch spray to restore the previous crispness.

Important exceptions to pre-washing: If the finished product will not ever be washed (like a stitchery), then there is no need to pre-wash. If the project involves charm packs or other pre-cuts, skip the pre-washing process! With pre-cuts, the fabric has already been cut to its specific dimensions, and pre-shrinkage will change everything! The most important principle is consistency. Either pre-wash all the fabrics in the project, or don't wash any of them.

The How-to:

Separate the light fabrics from the dark fabrics. Use a permanent press cycle with a warm wash and cool rinse.

Use a mild detergent and skip the fabric softener.

Toss in the dryer using a permanent press setting.

Iron with a heavy starch. Clip off any loose threads.

I have actually really grown to enjoy the pre-washing process. Sometimes you notice little details in the fabric design you didn't notice before because of the few minutes you are forced to look at it while you iron. I find that love it even more than I did before and am that much more excited to get started. It sounds totally cheesy, but there you have it!

Week 2: Cutting Fabric & Arranging Blocks

We are ready to cut the fabric into nice 5" squares. It is absolutely critical to have the right cutting tools. If you are using scissors to cut your blocks, this is a major problem. Not only will it take forever to cut the blocks, they will not be even. In all likelihood, you will hate sewing before you have even started.

Trust me when I say that I would not survive without my fabulous tools. I swear by my Omnigrid cutting mat, rotary cutter, and rulers! It is well-worth the expense to invest in good tools. The finished product always ends up looking better.

For this project, we will need eighty 5" squares. You should be able to get twelve squares from each fat quarter. To begin, lay one fat quarter onto your cutting mat. Don't worry about lining up the edges with the grid lines. In fact, slightly overlap the top and right sides.

Line up the ruler with the grid line just inside the edge of the fabric. Holding the ruler down firmly (I use the Omnigrid ruler grip double suction cup), cut along the ruler's edge. Remove the excess scrap.

Move the ruler 5" to the left of the new, clean edge of the fabric. Hold the ruler down firmly and cut along the edge. Keep moving to the left 5" and repeat until you have cut four 5" columns.

To cut the columns into blocks, we need a straight top-edge. Turn the ruler perpendicular to the columns. Line up the ruler with the grid line just below the top's edge and cut across. Move the ruler 5" down from the clean top-edge of the fabric. Hold the ruler down firmly and cut along the edge. Keep moving down 5" until you have cut three rows of blocks.

You will have twelve 5" blocks! Repeat these steps to cut up all of your fat quarters.

Now, my favorite part--to arrange them. I usually spend a good amount of time just playing with the blocks and their order. Here they are, arranged at random:

Week 3: Sewing It Together & Basting

Now that the blocks are arranged to your liking, it's time to sew them together. The easiest way to do this is to sew the blocks into rows, and then all of the rows together. Use 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise stipulated. Start by taking the first two blocks of the top row.

Place them right sides together with the raw edges matching up.

Week 4: Quilting & Binding

Now that the quilt has been basted and safety-pinned, it is time to quilt it. (Careful basting beforehand is absolutely crucial in keeping the layers in place.) Quilting is a fancy word that means sewing all the layers together. There are a number of ways to quilt your masterpiece.

If you want something decorative like a freehand swirl design, check out my Freehand Machine Quilting Tutorial. A darning foot is required for this method. Also, I would only recommend this method if you are using cotton or flannel fabric for the back. Anything thicker tends to be a little more problematic. Not impossible, just problematic.

Because I am using a soft minky material, I am going to insert little invisible stitches throughout the quilt. (My quilt's thickness demands a method more practical than decorative.) If yours is thick like mine, I recommend my Invisible Quilting Tutorial. As the name implies, the quilting is hard to see. Can you spot any of the dimples?

Another method I am dying to try would require a walking foot--which I do not possess. The walking foot is used to quilt straight lines, which opens up a lot of quilting design possibilities.

Or, if you do not want to quilt it yourself, you could pay a professional to do it for you.

Finally, let's finish the quilt with a binding. To get started, first trim the batting and back fabric to line up with the quilt-top perimeter. Then, cut at least four (possibly five) 3" strips cut across the width of the binding fabric.

Next, connect the strips at a bias, which basically means at a diagonal. This is done by overlapping one strip perpendicular to another, right sides together. (I let the selvages overlap since I don't want them showing but could have just as easily trimmed them off first.) Using a ruler and pencil, draw a diagonal line as indicated.

Pin in place and stitch along the diagonal line.

Trim the excess and iron open the seam. See how the seam runs diagonally?

Repeat to sew all strips together end-to-end at a bias. Fold the resulting long strip in half lengthwise and iron it flat.

Lay the starting end of the strip in the middle of a side of the quilt so that the raw edges of the strip and quilt line up. Lower the presser foot onto the strip and stitch using 3/8" seam allowance, leaving the first eight inches of the strip unstitched.

Keep sewing down that side and stop 3/8" before the end.

Pull the quilt out from the machine and trim the threads.

Fold the binding upward so it is in a straight line with the quilt.

Bring the binding back down and line up its raw edge with the quilt's side.

Begin sewing down the new side using the same 3/8" seam allowance. Keep sewing to the end of that side and repeat the steps above to pivot at the corner.

Stop once you are a couple of feet away from the starting-end of the strip. Measure and trim the tails so that they overlap by exactly 3 1/4".

Unfold the strip and bring the ends together at a bias (right sides together) so they overlap by 1/8". You may have to bunch up the quilt to be able to get them to overlap.

Using a ruler and pencil, draw a diagonal line as indicated. Pin in place, sew along the line, and trim the excess.

Fold the binding back in half lengthwise and pin it onto the quilt (it should fit perfectly).

Resume stitching the binding in place.

Voila!

Turn the quilt over and fold the binding over the edge, pinning in place.

Miter the corners.

Stitch the binding in place by hand. The easiest way to do this is double-thread a needle and tie a knot at the end. Bring the needle through the back material and into the binding at an angle. For the next stitch, repeat but bring the needle up through the back directly below where it came up through the binding on the last stitch. Bring it up through the binding at an angle. Repeat around the quilt perimeter. (Secretly, I love this part because I can kick up my feet and watch TV while I sew.)

Then, admire your handiwork!!

I love how it turned out! Truthfully, I want to keep it for Olive, but how many quilts does Olive really need?!? Instead, it is available for sale in my etsy shop!

A Simple Running Stitch

A simple running stitch (or straight stitch) is a very basic stitch used in embroidery or hand-sewing. It look like a series of dashes; an interrupted line or outline. In essence, you run the needle in-and-out of the fabric.

In this demonstration, we are using the running stitch to outline a bird silhouette. We'll begin by threading a needle with a whole strand of embroidery floss and tying a knot at the end.

Bring the needle up through the fabric just outside of the bird silhouette.

Guide the needle back down through the fabric, approximately 1/4" away, continuing to follow the bird outline.

Bring the needle back up through the fabric a small space away (smaller than 1/4").

Repeat to bring the needle back down 1/4" away, continuing to following the bird outline.

This is what the first two stitches will look like:

I've chosen these stitches to be 1/4" long for the demonstration, but they can be longer or shorter depending on what the project requires or what your preference is.

What is a Fat Quarter?

For those of you wondering what "fat quarters" are, this post is for you. Here is what they look like. You may have seen them at the quilt shop.

A fat quarter is a 1/4 yard of fabric. Its dimensions are 18 x 22".

What makes this cut of fabric "fat," is how it is cut. Normally, if you ask for quarter-yard cut of fabric off the bolt, you will get a piece of fabric measuring 9 x 45".

Instead, a fat quarter is made by taking 1/2 yard of fabric (18 x 45") and cutting it in half width-wise. Both are technically 1/4 yard cuts of fabric, but fat quarters are generally preferred because you can get more out of it.

For example, let's say I am cutting 5" blocks for a project. From a traditional 1/4 yard of fabric, I will only be able to get nine squares maximum from it. From a fat quarter, I will get twelve. That's more blocks for my money.

Oh how I love fat quarters. They are little bundles of happiness.

Spring Birds

I am in love with this pattern! I was excited when I stumbled upon it at Spool Sewing. (Click here to download their free pattern and instructions.)

I decided to make five birds for my Spring Tree using a hip Houndstooth print from Michael Miller Fabrics, and using a simple white pattern for the belly.

Once all my birds were stuffed and sewn, I just perched them in the branches and they stay really well. However, you may need to affix a thin ribbon to the back of each bird (prior to stuffing) if you wish it to be hung instead.

Modge Podge Hearts

When I was putting together ornament ideas for the Spring Tree, I knew I needed something yellow. This sweet print is from a collection called "Aunt Grace Circle of Friends" by Marcus Fabrics. Isn't it gorgeous? If you haven't ever worked with Modge Podge--you're not alone--it was my first time using it as well. Now I want to Modge Podge everything in sight...

Materials:
Unfinished wood cut-outs in the desired shape
Modge Podge Glue*
Small paint brush
Fabric scraps or scrapbook paper

Wood-spring clothespins

*When you purchase Modge Podge, you will notice they sell Paper Modge Podge and Fabric Modge Podge. Buy the paper kind--it can be used for both materials!

The first step is to trace your wood-cut shape onto the "wrong" side of the fabric. I decided to make five hearts, so I will need to trace it ten times total (to cover both sides). Because the heart shape I have selected isn't symmetrical, I need to trace it five times on one side, and five times on the other side.

Using your paint brush, apply a generous amount of Modge Podge glue to one side of your wood-cut.

Line up the fabric or paper shape and press it in place. Let each wood-cut sit about 20 minutes before repeating this on the other side.

Oh yeah, and you can spray the clothespins with a colored spray paint if you wish. I made mine white! Once everything is dry, you can simply clip the wood-cuts to branches on your Spring Tree with the clothespins.

Assembling the Tree

To create your own seasonal tree, you must first find the perfect branch. You may be lucky enough to find it in your yard, or it may require a trip up the canyon.

Once you have found the perfect branch, you may need to clean it or prune it first. Next, spray it with a white floral paint spray. I like using "Design Master" brand. The difference between a floral spray and a regular spray paint is that the floral spray will let through some of the branch's natural color. (See below!) I used numerous coats of paint--just keep adding the layers until the branch has achieved the color you want!

Now it's time to put your branch into its container. I want to use a ceramic pot, but since Plaster of Paris expands, it will break the ceramic if I pot it directly into the ceramic container. Instead, I first put mine in a baby food canister that will fit inside my ceramic pot. (A soup can could work also.) If you prefer to pot yours in a cute metal tin or other non-breakable container, you can cement it directly in the container.

After the plaster of Paris has set, you can add some sparkle to the tree by spraying it with a clear sealer and pouring the glitter on while it's still wet.

When I put the small canister in my ceramic pot, you will notice that it is not a tight fit.

To fix this, purchase floral foam (available at arts/craft stores) and stuff it into the open space around the canister. [I had wet foam on hand, so that's what I used. It was messy, but will still keep everything packed in there nicely like the floral foam would.]

Next, I covered all that up with some decorative stones. If you don't have any beautiful ones readily available in your backyard, you can buy them from a home decor or arts/crafts store.

Now it's time to decorate!

Metal Star Wall Art Tutorial

The metal star is a very popular decoration in homes today. I used mine to cover up an unsightly phone jack in the middle of my kitchen entry, (so it can be practical as well). These metal stars can be expensive--when I took a trip to the craft store, most were around $30 to $40, although you may be able to find them cheaper on Amazon.com.

I was looking for a good deal. I got my purple metal star 60% off and paid just under $8 for it (at the same craft store, in the sale section). Who cares that it was purple? That's what paint is for. My only dilemma was trying to decide between cream and turquoise... The moral of the story: cheap and ugly + coat of paint = fabulous.

After I got home, I laid out the star on my work surface (cardboard box on a canvas sheet).

Next, I added about four layers of white primer. I used Kilz-brand.

I then painted it with Krylon spray paint in a cream color...that was back when I thought I wanted cream. Once it dried, I held it up against the wall and decided it didn't look good against the white wall.

No big deal! I just laid the star back down and used Krylon's spray paint in turquoise (a couple of layers) until it was as I wanted it. It was an easy afternoon project!

I suppose it was inevitable that I should become a quilter. Addictions of this magnitude tend to be familial, and oh my goodness have I been predisposed!

I am so blessed to have an artistic mother who has shared her talents with me all my life. {Thanks to her, I became a full-blown quilt addict by the time I was about sixteen years old.}

I will never forget the day I found my mother kneeling over a sunflower quilt project, arranging colorful blocks onto fusible grid. I have always admired sunflowers and their unwavering dedication to follow the light. In that moment, I knew that I wanted to create beautiful things. (And yes, I had to duplicate the sunflower quilt!)

It's ten years later and I am happy to report that I've quit my day job to stay home with my spunky little girl, Olive. I'm busier than ever but loving every minute of my life! Not only do I get to take extra good care of my family, but now I have more time to create and am learning a lot along the way.

This quilt doesn't really have a name! I made it for Fall Quilt Market 2011 for Marcus Fabrics using the fabric from French Dress by Laura Berringer.

This is my Miss Spunky Rose quilt using a line of fabric called "Chelsea" by Whistler Studios for Windham Fabrics.

This quilt doesn't really have a name yet so I have been calling it "The Quilt of a Thousand Swear Words." Though this quilt actually gave me no trouble, the tutorial came about because of frustrating situations while quilting fleece-backed quilts. It was an experiment that will hopefully turn into a pattern soon.

This is my husband's favorite quilt! I used fabric from a collection called "Pure" by Sweetwater for Moda. I also used my pattern which is available by mail or PDF download.
